What is a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and how are they different from psychiatrists (MD/DO)?A board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC) is a registered nurse that received additional education at the masters or doctoral level. PMHNPs obtain advanced training in prescribing, diagnosing, and management of psychiatric and behavioral health disorders. Additionally, PMHNPs are trained under the nursing model of care which emphasizes holistic health, health promotion, and disease prevention. PMHNPs are independent providers who work collaboratively alongside physicians. Nurse Practitioners who receive their doctorate may use the title "doctor" indicating the possession of a doctoral degree as with other professionals who obtain their doctorate. Nurse Practitioners are not physicians. Psychiatrists are physicians who have a doctoral degree in medicine (Doctor of Medicine "MD") or osteopathic medicine (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine "DO"). Psychiatrists undergo rigorous and extensive training in the treatment and management of psychiatric disorders. Psychiatrists may also receive additional training in specialty areas including child and adolescent psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, addictions, and psychotherapy. In many settings, psychiatrists collaborate with PMHNPs to ensure that clients receive the best possible care.
